New Media Awards / lots of nice geo data

Written on July 30, 2007

PlanningAlerts.com was up for the New Statesman New Media Award for information and openness last week. In the end we lost out to the lovely and useful Intellegent Giving, but mySociety picked up 2 for Downing Street petitions and FixMyStreet.com. Chris Lightfoot’s mum Pru accepted the second award following a nice speech from Francis.

Weirdly this was the first time that, despite having spent the last 6 months slowly eeking PlanningAlerts forward, me, Mikel and Duncan had actually been in the same room, well tent really, together.

Before the awards I took a peek in our database and we now have the best part of 30,000 planning applications - all geo-referenced and available under a creative commons license. If you can think of something fun to do with the data then the api is here, along with a dump of the database.
