I’m free of windows! (nearly)
Written on November 14, 2005
I started trying to find an alternative to Windows at the begining of
the summer. After a few (too many) false starts I think I am nearly there, so Im posting this up in case its any use to people trying to do the same:
OS: Ubuntu (idiot proof linux)
Office: Open Office
Email: evolution (looks a bit dull but does work)
Photo manager F-spot (better than anything on Windows)
Programming: eclipse (a pain in the arse to work out but does all you need (except dotnet)
Desktop Search: Beagle (better than google desktop)
IM: Gaim (too many annoying dialogs but that easily makes up for loosing the ads on MSN)
Desktop wiki: Tomboy (better than anything ive found on windows)
Paint: Photoshop running with crossover office (I tried Gimp, but its far too much hastle to learn)
Web: Firefox (’nough said)
Audio: Banshee (not quite up to itunes standard, but at least there isnt a ‘buy this album’ link everywhere)
